Well, This Might Cause Some Headaches…

On Sept 22nd, The New York Times released the first in a series of articles entitled The Cloud Factories, which blasted the data center industry for its inefficient use of energy. The article was based on a yearlong study conducted by The New York Times and focused primarily on the vast amount of energy used world-wide by data centers. Special notice was paid towards the inefficiency involved in maintaining redundant power supplies within data centers.

Washington Reacts

Rather than spending time to question any specific points raised in the article, the more pressing concern for all of us in the industry is the fact that this article is getting some attention on Capitol Hill. Several of the leading Democrats in the US House of Representatives have already asked the Department of Energy (DoE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to begin considering what steps can or should be done to ensure that the data center industry is using the US electric grid responsibly.

So How Will This Affect You?

No one can really be sure yet. It obviously depends on your location and your specific industry.

But all signs point to some level of pressure for federal involvement in how YOU run YOUR data center. You’ve got plenty of time to deal with that, right?

What Can You Do?

Ideally, you’d have the time, resources, and budget to ensure that your data center is using power in the most efficient manner available. I don’t think any of us dispute this. However, most of us deal with constant budget pressure and/or a consistent lack of talented resources. And considering that new trends or options for increased power efficiency are evolving rapidly, it’s tough to stay on top of the latest and greatest processes or products.

Introducing the Silent Cube – Long Term Archiving with ‘Zero’ Power

The Silent Cube by Fast LTA is one of the more intriguing products we’ve encountered. An amazing solution for your second and third tier storage – the Silent Cube combines unparalleled reliability with impressive cost savings.

Reduce your overall storage costs by moving your archive data sets onto Silent Cubes – save your more expensive primary storage for your most frequently retrieved data, reduce energy costs dramatically, and have the option to expand your storage capacity incrementally as needed.

Silent Cubes help to free up your valuable online storage (SAN). Using archiving or HSM software, you then store less frequently accessed data on your specialized Silent Cubes long-term storage unit. This allows you to cut your costs by up to 80%.

A Simple Network Share Connection

Regardless of which archiving, DMS or HSM solution you use, and whether your archiving needs encompass medical PACS data, emails or other documents, Silent Cubes integrate seamlessly into your infrastructure.

The Silent Cubes storage system consists of a Head Unit (also available as a version for VMware® in virtual server environments) serving as the interface to your network, plus up to 128 Silent Cube storage units. Individually configurable volumes (reserved storage areas) and network shares (with variable access rights) ensure problem-free interoperability with software solutions.

Simply place a duplicate system of Silent Cubes in your DR site (one head unit & an equal number and capacity of Silent Cubes) and connect the two head units via the admin interface. The master and slave head units share a virtual IP address, making failover a breeze. Choose whether you want the slave unit to operate as read-only or in full-access mode.

Asynchronous replication occurs on a per-write basis. There is no scheduling to worry about or any time lag to consider during recovery.

What’s LTFS?

LTFS (Linear Tape File System) is a self-describing tape format that defines the organization of data and metadata on an LTO-6 or LTO-5 tape. Data written in the LTFS format can be directly accessed from the tape – independent of a storage system or external database.

And for the rest of us that aren’t tape library engineers…

LTFS allows you to read an LTO-6 or LTO-5 tape just like a a disk. That’s right – the LTO tape that you once used only for backup can NOW become an incredibly cost-effective way to scale the capacity of your storage network.

Think of it – you would have the ability to increase your capacity at an unprecedented low cost. Simply add additional tapes (at up to 6.25TB each) to your LTO system and STILL have the ability to access and modify the data contained on them just as though the data resided on disk. With data transfer rates of up to 400 MB/s, you could make a SERIOUS capacity upgrade with very little effect on speed or your budget! Tape is once again a viable, if not preferred, option for your archival data as well as the standard for backup data sets.

But it’s a tape – how does that work?

The key is that the tape maintains a stub file. Think of this as a table of contents for the data and files on that tape. Once a tape is mounted, the metadata of each cartridge is stored on your server’s cache. Users can then perform metadata operations (such as a search or browsing the file contents) without requiring the tape to even be mounted in a drive. It can then start giving you information about that requested file as the tape spins up to locate that file. Much like being able to see a thumbnail of files on your hard disk without actually opening the files.

So why haven’t I heard much about LTFS yet?

LTFS was introduced with LTO-5 in 2010. The problem was that there weren’t any applications or appliances ready to incorporate this game-changing file system yet. Just this year, we’ve started to finally see a wave of appliances introduced to use this technology to absolutely revolutionize that way you look at your storage area network. The cost savings can be tremendous when you consider that ability to leverage storing certain data on disk and other data on tape, not to mention the energy savings of having data reside on a tape that doesn’t need to spin all day to offer online availability.

The hard drives are audited on-site — you receive an list of the drive serial numbers to be eradicated. These drives are then sent via secure transport to our facility.

Upon arrival at our secure facility, a second audit is performed. So now you have the first audit to show exactly which drives left your facility and a second audit to show that each of these drives are now located in our facility and awaiting your final confirmation before any eradication work begins. Upon your confirmation to proceed, the eradication work begins and you are provided with a final certificate of data destruction.

This may seem like an unnecessary, extra step in the process. In fact – many of our clients have found that this was the absolutely most critical step. We’re always impressed at the detail with which our clients track of all their IT assets. But even the best of these processes is subject to plain old human error. Not your error of course, you can blame that new guy! A simple mistake made when cataloging that drive or tape into your system under the wrong location or status could mean that you are about to eradicate ACTIVE data… big headache!

This extra verification done during off-site eradication provides you with two key things: time and separation. You have as much time as you need to verify that those are indeed that drives or tapes that you MEANT to flag for destruction. Having the assets physically separated from your environment makes the process much smoother AND safer as it will be easier for you to recognize any discrepancies, and thankfully you still have the time to act on them.

Studies have now shown that traditional methods of data eradication (or sanitization) MAY NOT be effective on flash-based solid state drives. The same architectural changes that make solid state drives (SSDs) so effective also make them structurally different when it comes to ensuring the safe and secure destruction of data stored on them. Play it safe and contact one of our service specialists!

Archive Data can ensure that the job is done right for you. And we will provide you the audit documentation you’ll need – whether that’s for regulatory compliance, job-security, or simply for peace of mind. This audit documentation is an often over-looked component of the end of life planning that can really come back to haunt you. Remember that these days it is not enough to document that IT assets were destroyed – you must be able to document that the data on them was destroyed.

Decide which option is best for you: Off-Site Eradication or On-Site Eradication:

On-Site Eradication – Archive Data personnel will arrive at your facility and once your team briefs us on the specifics, we take it from there. You can remain as involved as you want in the process – our goal is to stay out of your way but to keep you as informed as you wish. Our team will perform a dual-verification process of data eradication. This means that we build an audit list of all drives or tapes that are meant for eradication and then we also provide an audit list of the drives and tapes that were eradicated. That way your team has clear visibility that nothing was missed during the process.

And don’t worry, we’ve seen it all. Whether it means having to truck up and down a 30-floor office tower all day long or working out of a spare conference room that over the years has been turned into a mountain of archive tapes and drives, our team is ready for anything you can throw at them.

Off-Site Eradication provides an extra layer of protection that may prove invaluable to you. The hard drives or tapes are audited on-site so that you have a list of the drive serial numbers or tape volsers to be eradicated. These drives or tapes are then sent via secure transport to our facility. Upon arrival at our secure facility, a second audit is performed.
IBM LTO 4 (800GB-1.6GB Tape Cartridge)

High-capacity IBM LTO 4 media for data storage growth

IBM is delivering high-capacity IBM LTO 4 media that helps provide clients the ability to address the demanding growth in data storage.

Increased cartridge capacity helps reduce the amount of equipment, space and human intervention required for daily tape operations. In addition, it helps reduce the number of cartridges and time associated with backup and restore operations, thus helping lower operational costs.

Features you need

With the IBM LTO 4 Ultrium 800 GB Data Cartridge, IBM continues to focus on providing high quality, high-reliability tape technology for your business. Clients can further protect data by using this high capacity cartridge with IBM LTO 4 encryption enabled drives. These cartridges continue to be part of a long line of IBM data cartridges designed to improve data integrity for organizations around the world.

The cartridges have been optimized and tested extensively for use in IBM LTO 4 tape drives and libraries to help maximize performance, minimize data loss and improve data longevity. They are designed to withstand rigors of normal use in stand-alone and automated environments. Each cartridge is embedded with an IBM LTO 4 Cartridge Memory (LTO-CM) chip, which is designed to enable fast, simultaneous transfer of cartridge-dependent data with IBM tape drives during media load and unload cycles. The green cartridge color helps distinguish it from previous generations of IBM LTO Ultrium Media.

The IBM LTO 4 Ultrium 800 GB Data Cartridge can be used in products featuring IBM LTO 4 tape technology. As your storage needs grow, your data cartridge can continue providing value to help maximize your investment.
